The project for the Leça do Balio Primary School, made by the Portuguese studio aNC, reminds us of an important debate that started in European architectural culture after the Second World War. It was about the main role of urban apparatus in creating a more playful, ecumenical and democratic spatiality. The discussion was particularly focused in Great Britain, where the welfare state system integrated a new generation of architects who designed various educational facilities with a single mission in mind: to build qualified places, using as few architectural elements as possible, for a larger number of users.
